Emergency action to restore 80% of ecological integrity in Amazonia by 2030 preventing cascading tipping points

Today we celebrate with our global community, the IUCN approval in the first instance of a new motion calling an “Emergency action to restore 80% of ecological integrity in Amazonia by 2030 preventing cascading tipping points (S168).”

Motion S168 will allow time to achieve the protection and restoration of Amazonia after the loss of more than 70 million hectares, an area equivalent to Italy or the whole state of California,  in the massive fires in 2023-2024.  Welcome to the start of a new chapter!

Motion S168 follows IUCN Resolution 129, which was the start of the Initiative “Amazonia for Life: protect 80% by 2025” in 2021.  With the support of 541 global civil society organizations and 62 ministries, we launched an Indigenous-led vision to save the Amazon.  In these 3.5 years, this is what we have achieved:

  • Support from 80+ Amazonian Indigenous organizations
  • Support from 1,300+ organizations globally
  • 2021: 1 IUCN Resolution (129) approved with 541 votes (66 ministries) with no dissenting votes – 2021
  • 2022: Indigenous Territories – a new conservation category – effort led by the Initiative and COICA
  • 2023: Colombia announced in the Amazon Summit the  adoption of the 80×2025 target as its official position.
  • 2023: 2 Resolutions at the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) urging Amazonian countries to protect 80% by 2025 prioritizing the recognition of Indigenous territories.
  • 2023: Belem Declaration – all Amazonian States establish the tipping point as a regional threat.
  • 2024: Creation of the IDB-COICA Fund for direct financing to Amazonian Indigenous Peoples.
  • 2024: The Colombian Ministry of Environment invites the Andean Community of Nations to join the Initiative and adopt the 80% protection goal by 2025.
  • 2021-2024: More than 1,000 news stories have covered our efforts.
  • 2025: So far a new motion to keep our work until 2030
